Overview

The Scorpio N is the last of a particular kind of Indian car: a big, heavy, ladder-frame SUV priced below monocoque rivals that cost considerably more. The 2.2-litre diesel makes 172 bhp and 370 Nm across a plateau that starts at 1500 rpm, which means it moves seven people and their luggage up a ghat road without the throttle going flat.

That architecture pays dividends on roads that have stopped pretending to be highways. The coil-spring independent rear does a credible job of keeping the third row civilised, the 220 mm of clearance turns a rutted field track into a non-event, and the boot, with the rear bench folded, takes a fortnight of shopping or a full camping kit. Five-star crash protection and six airbags as standard round out a safety case the price does not suggest.

The costs are dimensional and financial. Parking a 4.66-metre SUV in a flat column is a negotiation, the body leans in corners in a way that asks for earlier braking, and diesel fuel prices have narrowed the running-cost gap with petrol over the car’s life. Claimed 15 kmpl becomes 11-12 kmpl if you drive it the way the torque invites.
