Overview

The Nexon built the compact SUV segment in India and is still the car rivals measure themselves against. The 1.2-litre turbo petrol makes 118 bhp and 170 Nm across a broad plateau, which means the car feels quicker around town than the specification sheet suggests and asks for a downshift far less often on ghat roads than the naturally aspirated alternatives.

Structural safety is the second pillar. A five-star Global NCAP adult score with six airbags fitted from the base variant upward is still more than several costlier cars offer, and the tall, short-overhang shape hides a wheelbase long enough to give adults proper knee room. The 350-litre boot is close to hatchback size, which is the one packaging compromise of a small car with a big footprint.

The trade-offs are refinement and economy. The three-cylinder engine is gruff at idle, wind and tyre noise arrive early on the motorway, and the seven-speed dual-clutch, while quick, is less polished in stop-start traffic than a torque converter. Claimed 17 kmpl becomes 11-12 kmpl in a city, so the running-cost case only holds if you keep it on expressways.

  • Five-star Global NCAP adult score
  • 170 Nm from the 1.2 turbo
  • Dual-clutch automatic option
