Overview

The Baleno occupies an odd middle ground: it is badged and priced as a hatchback but is long enough, wide enough and deep enough inside to do sedan duty for a family of four. The 1.2-litre dual-injection petrol engine makes 89 bhp, the most power in the segment without a turbo, and it pulls cleanly from 60 km/h in the middle of the gearbox without needing a downshift to stay in the conversation.

Space is where the case gets built. There is genuine knee room in the second row, the door bins swallow large bottles, and the boot swallows 318 litres of luggage, more than a few sedans of similar cost. Top trims add a heads-up display, a 360-degree camera and wireless charging, which puts the options list within touching distance of compact SUVs that cost two lakh more.

The trade-off is that refinement is good but never quiet, and safety is the weakest part of the argument: a three-star Global NCAP adult score sits well behind the Tata offerings, and the structure carries six airbags rather than out-performing them in the test. Buy the ZXi or ZXi+ and the Baleno remains one of the sensible values in the market; buy the base Sigma and you are paying mostly for sheet metal.

  • Segment-leading 318-litre boot
  • Six airbags fitted as standard
  • 23 kmpl claimed economy
