Overview
The R15 is the motorcycle that taught an entire generation of Indian buyers what a proper chassis feels like. The upside-down fork, the aluminium-framed stiffness and the geometry that came out of Yamaha’s circuit programme still make it the reference point at 155cc, and the thing that separates it from the field is how composed it feels mid-corner rather than how hard it accelerates.
The 155cc variable-valve-actuation single is a willing unit that asks to be worked. Peak power arrives at 10,000 rpm and the engine genuinely likes the last quarter of the tacho, which means the six-speed box is used hard in city traffic where a torquey commuter would sit in a higher gear. The quickshifter, fitted from the mid trim up, is the most useful electronic on any small-capacity bike sold here.
The compromises are the ones that come with any track-biased 155. The pegs are high enough to catch on a speed breaker loaded with a pillion, the rear of the bike is firm over broken tarmac, and the riding position asks something of the wrists on a long run. Buyers who want one motorcycle for the office and the racetrack will accept all of it; buyers who only ride in traffic should test-ride the ergonomics first.
- Quickshifter and traction control from the mid trim
- Upside-down fork and a trellis-derived frame
- 42 kmpl claimed despite a 10,000 rpm power peak

Pros and cons
What we like
- The best chassis and suspension in the 155cc class by a clear margin
- Quickshifter works cleanly from mid-rev rather than only near the redline
- Still returns 40 kmpl when ridden gently
What we would change
- Firm rear end and high pegs make it tiring on broken city roads
- Pillion arrangements are token at best
- Power output has not moved despite a price increase
Expert review
MotoSutra score
4.4/5
Our verdict
Buy the R15 M at ₹1.68 lakh if you ride with any intent at all, because the quickshifter and traction control are the two things that separate this from a good bike. Anyone who mostly rides in traffic with a passenger should test the ergonomics before signing.

Frequently asked questions
What is the price of the Yamaha R15 V4?
The range spans ₹1.55 lakh to ₹1.72 lakh ex-showroom Delhi NCR. The R15 M badging sits at the top of that band and adds the quickshifter and traction control.
What mileage does the R15 give?
Claimed at 42 kmpl. Riders who keep it below 6,000 rpm report 45 kmpl around town; ridden hard the number falls to the low 30s.
What is the real top speed of the R15 V4?
Indicated 140 km/h, with GPS-verified figures close to 130 km/h. It accelerates most strongly between 80 and 120 km/h, where the aerodynamics help.
Is the R15 M the same motorcycle as the R15 V4?
Mechanically yes — same 155cc VVA engine, same frame and suspension. The M buys the quickshifter, traction control and connectivity package, which is the reason for the ₹13,000 gap.
