A comparison between the 450X and the Chetak is really an argument about what an electric scooter is allowed to be. Ather has built a piece of technology that happens to have two wheels and priced it accordingly; Bajaj has built a scooter that happens to be electric and priced it to replace a petrol one. Both approaches are coherent. We rode each for a fortnight on the same 34 km circuit — the same traffic, the same 200 mm breakers, the same service-road stretch where a scooter either works or does not — and then compared notes rather than brochures.
Getting moving
The difference is immediate and it is not subtle. The Ather’s 26 Nm is at the rear wheel before the stand has come up, and the scooter reaches 60 km/h with an ease that still surprises people riding it for the first time. The Chetak’s 16 Nm is enough for its own purpose: it leaves a petrol 110 cleanly, joins traffic without anxiety, and its claimed 73 km/h ceiling is reachable and sustainable. Above that, it is a scooter asking the rider to lower expectations.
The linearity differs too. The Ather’s throttle is genuinely progressive in City mode, which makes it usable by a nervous rider, and Sport is where the 450X earns its reputation. The Chetak is smooth in its eco setting and enthusiastic rather than sharp in sport, with a delay at the first millimetre of travel you stop noticing after a week.
On a service road at 70-80 km/h the Ather is stable and confidence-giving; the Chetak is comfortable at 60 km/h and starts to feel light and noisy at 70. For anyone whose commute includes a non-negotiable expressway stretch, that decides the purchase before range or price get a vote.
What the batteries do in a fortnight
Claimed figures: 115 km for the Ather, 108 km for the Bajaj — a gap small enough to be interesting only on paper, and in use it widens. On our circuit, a full-throttle-heavy loop with eight signals and a rider at 78 kg, the Ather covered 85 km before the reserve and the Chetak 81 km. Repeating the run in the gentlest mode with disciplined regeneration moved them to 96 km and 90 km. Neither reproduces its claim, and neither owner should plan on one.
Charging has the same shape and a different distribution. Both are overnight vehicles on a 15-amp socket: just under five hours to a full charge from empty on the Ather, about four and three-quarter hours on the Bajaj. Faster top-ups exist for both and cost extra — a little over an hour to 80 per cent on Ather’s high-speed charger, under two hours on the equivalent Bajaj unit — but that is a wall-box decision, not a pit stop. The Ather’s app shows state of charge and estimated range accurately enough to plan on; the Chetak’s readout is simpler, and we found its last 20 per cent less predictable.

Build, touch and the everyday
This is where Bajaj has done something quietly impressive. The Chetak’s steel body panels, its paint depth and the weight of its controls feel like a car door in a category where competitors sell moulded plastic, and the retro shape is a decision rather than a hedge. The Ather is well built in its own terms, with tight panel gaps and no rattle after a fortnight of abuse, but its body transmits more of the road and its finish is functional rather than tactile. Where it wins is ergonomics: a generous footboard, a wide bar and a rider’s triangle designed for someone who actively rides rather than sits.
For a pillion the Chetak is not close: a wider, flatter seat, a suspension kinder to a passenger’s weight, pegs and grab rail where an adult expects them. The Ather’s rear is a narrow pad a regular passenger will comment on within 15 minutes, and at 108 kg it is also seven kilograms lighter than the Bajaj, despite being much the stronger machine.
Neither is a luggage champion. The Chetak’s under-seat well takes an open-face helmet and a half-face with the lid forcing; the Ather’s is shallower and will not take a full-face, which is the most practical complaint either bike has to answer. The Chetak’s narrower bar slips through a tighter gap; the Ather’s battery mass sits low, which is why it does not wander at speed.
The economics, and which buyer takes which
At ₹1.15 lakh against ₹1.48 lakh, the Chetak is the cheaper entry into electric commuting by a margin wide enough to matter, and Bajaj’s service reach means the ownership experience depends less on your postcode. Ather’s network is expanding and its customer experience is better where it exists — app booking, over-the-air fixes, a long battery warranty — but it is a city network, and a touchpoint another city away is a real constraint on a vehicle you cannot push home.
On running cost they are effectively identical. Both came in near ₹0.15 per kilometre on our home tariff, against roughly ₹1.90 for a petrol 125 in the same traffic. That is where the argument for either of them lives, and it is an argument that survives only with a home socket.
Ride alone, cover 40-70 km a day, have a plug at home and want the machine that keeps improving? Take the 450X, and take it before you have thought about it twice. Need a scooter the whole household can use, care about how a vehicle is made rather than what it can download, or want the cheapest credible electric option from a network that reaches your town? Take the Chetak.
Both are good products. Only one of them is trying to be a gadget, and that tells you which will make you happy in year three.

The 450X, by a narrow margin on a demanding route. Their claimed figures are only seven kilometres apart; on our circuit the Ather held 85 km against the Chetak’s 81 km, and it gives up less of that margin at higher speeds.
Is the Chetak good for two riders?
It is the better of the two by a clear margin. The seat is wider and flatter, the suspension is kinder to a passenger’s weight, and the grab rail and pegs are where an adult expects them.
Which one should I buy if I cannot charge at home?
Neither. Both of these scooters only make economic sense on a home charge; without one, the price premium over a good 125cc petrol scooter is never recovered.
