Kawasaki Z650 2021 Overview

The naked Kawasaki Z650, if you are buying a big bike, can be intimidating, coming from something small. It can be a sizeable jump in terms of performance, ease of use, and price. But there are a few motorcycles that make that leap a lot less daunting. And one such example is Kawasaki’s middleweight.

Kawasaki Z650 2021 Styling & Changes

In this new iteration, Kawasaki has made some changes. That not only differentiate but set it apart from its predecessor.

  • The engine is now BS6 and Euro 5 compliant,
  • The second and more notable is the design,
  • Kawasaki has stripped away the few curves of the older model,
  • Sharpened up the lines around the tank,
  • And the headlight and given it, a new paint scheme.

What this has done is give the bike a much more dynamic and provocative design. Something the Japanese manufacturer refers to as Tsugumi.

There is some functionality amongst this new form too. The new LED headlight not only looks great but also does a pretty good job of illuminating what is in front of you.

Kawasaki Z650 2021 Features

  • 649 cc parallel bicylindrical engine and liquid cooling;
  • Lattice frame;
  • Daisy-shaped disc brakes;
  • Compact tail;
  • LED flashlight;
  • Adjustable levers;
  • Compact multifunctional panel.

The addition of a TFT instrument cluster is a compact unit but one of the crispest ones we have seen at this price point. Already from the rider’s point of view because it can look quite pixelated up close. This unit can also be connected to Kawasaki’s Rideology App.

Kawasaki Z650 Engine Specs

  • Engine type: 2 cylinders, 4 stroke;
  • Cylinder capacity: 649 cc;
  • Transmission: 6 speeds;
  • Valve system: 8 valves;
  • Fuel system: Electronic injection;
  • Compression ratio: 10.8: 1;
  • Diameter x Stroke: 83.0 x 60.0 mm;
  • Departure: Electric;
  • Lubrication: Forced lubrication (semi-dry sump);
  • Ignition: Digital;

You will find that the Kawasaki Z650 is much the same as before. At its center is a 649 cc liquid-cooled parallel-twin engine. In this BS6 model—the peak power of 68 horsepower and peak torque of 64 Newton-meters. Torque is down by 1.7-newton meters. But that is not something you will notice.

Kawasaki Z650 Performance

  • Maximum torque: 65.7 N • m (6.7 kgf • m) / 6,500 rpm;
  • Maximum power: 50.2 kW (68 hp) / 8,000 rpm.
  • 0-100 Kph in 4.8 seconds

And not that you will complain either because the Z650 is quick. And if you are eager with the throttle, the front end will lift easily in first gear. Push through the 6-speed gearbox. And you would blast past 100 kilometers per hour in a sports car, timing 4.8 seconds.

Exhaust

Complementing that performance is a more guttural exhaust note. Kawasaki has tweaked the intake and exhaust to comply with the latest dementia norms. And these changes seem to have affected the way the Z650 sounds.

The lower revs are loud and bassy. But this is an engine that likes to rev. And with this BS6 update, we found that the bike emits a slightly more raspy throaty note. And that added some much-needed aggression to experience this.

Clutch

Now, this is undoubtedly an engine that is happiest higher up in the rev band. But it is also quite tractable at slow speeds. You can carry a gear high and a light clutch. It means you can avoid an unwarranted forearm workout while you are stuck in traffic.

Tires

And, it could have been even with better tires. The new Dunlop Sportmax road sport dews proved ok in the dry. But, they do get squirmy in the wet.

Brakes

There are a couple more aspects where we would like to see some improvement.

  • Rear: Type – Single 220 mm daisy-shaped disc;
  • Rear: Caliper – Single piston;
  • Front: Type – 300 mm double daisy-shaped disc;
  • Front: Caliper – Double piston;

The first is with the brakes stopping power is decent. But we found that the abs sometimes intervene prematurely and quite aggressively.

The ground clearance at 130 MM the Z650 bottoms out. Over most sharply angled speed breakers even without the weight of a pillion.

Kawasaki Z650 Ergonomics

\"Kawasaki

The seat is low, and the handlebar is flat and wide. Now I am five feet ten inches tall, and this bike fits me just right. When I am sitting up, it is rather good to ride. One thing for sure, your back is not going to hurt, even on a long tour.

But tuck In higher speeds, and it gets a bit cramped. It is because the handlebar is quite close to you. And this tends to bring your elbows in contact with your knees.

Dimension

  • Tank capacity: 15 liters;
  • Seat height: 790 mm;
  • Minimum height from the ground: 130 mm;
  • Total height: 1,080 mm;
  • Total length: 2,055 mm;
  • Weight (With fuel and oil): 187 Kg;
  • Total width: 775 mm;
  • Between axles: 1,410 mm;

Alright, so this is a bike that you can live within the city. But whether Z650 thrives, though, is in the twisties. An impressive mid-range makes it super fun for darting from corner to corner.

Conclusion

The new Kawasaki Z650.

  • It looks good,
  • It is easy to ride in the city,
  • And it is fun out in the twisties at just under rupees 6 lakhs.
  • It is also the only Japanese middleweight street naked in our country.

Given our riding conditions, I think this is one of the easy first big bikes to step up. There is enough performance on offer, it is easy to live with, and it is affordable. But we have a competitor motorcycle this year, and that is the all-new Triumph Trident 660.
